How to Create a Trace for Support in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations

When seeking technical support for errors in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, you may be requested to provide a trace. What’s a trace? A trace is the collection of technical data in the background of the actions that you are taking in the foreground. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Version
  • Navigation
  • Bread crumbs
  • Field inputs
  • Stored procedures
  • User

Note: Even though most customers, commentators, and consultants still call it Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, Microsoft now technically licenses it as Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management.

Follow the steps below for creating a trace:

Navigate to the window where you are having the issue.

Click on the question mark (?) in the top righthand corner and select Trace.

Give your trace a name and click Start trace.

Navigate to the issue that you are experiencing. Once you have experienced the issue, Stop trace.

You can then download the trace to your local computer for use or upload the trace for analysis.

The resulting file will assist the support individual in providing direction to the resolution.
