Lesson From the Field: Keeping it in Perspective

I was at a client site recently and needed the System Admin password. When I asked for it, I was directed to the sticky note on the cork board over the desk.

Now before you all take a deep gasp and say: “that doesn’t follow any form of security protocol!” – let’s put it in perspective.  For a public company with many levels of authority, approval and compliance requirements – this probably is not going to cut it (and we have lots of recommendations and solutions for these types of clients).  But for a standalone system with one user and no network access – this may be acceptable!

This has reminded me to continue to keep perspective – we have best practices and recommendations, but it’s essential to keep our clients’ uniqueness in mind!
