Microsoft 365 Business vs Office 365 Enterprise: Key Differences Explained
Choosing the right Microsoft 365 plan can feel confusing, especially as Microsoft’s product names and features continue to evolve. What used to be commonly referred to as “Office 365 Business” is now part of the Microsoft 365 Business lineup, while Microsoft still offers Office 365 Enterprise plans for organizations with larger or more complex needs. Additionally, there are Microsoft 365 Enterprise license options available.
Microsoft 365 Business plans are designed for small and midsize organizations with up to 300 users, while Office 365 Enterprise plans have no user limit. Even though both offerings give you access to basic functionality, there are some big and small differences between Microsoft 365 Business and Office 365 Enterprise.
In this blog article, I’m going to explain the key differences that will help you decide between an O365 Enterprise plan and an M365 Business plan. For an overview, check out the comparison table.
Microsoft 365 Business Plans
There are three versions of Microsoft 365 for small businesses. You might be attracted to these plans because they tend to be a little bit less expensive, while still offering a wide range of basic functionality.
The most important thing to remember about Microsoft 365 Business plans is that you can only purchase these plans if you’re going to be getting 300 seats or less. These plans provide the core productivity and collaboration tools many businesses need, including Microsoft Office apps, business email, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive cloud storage, Copilot chat, and security capabilities, depending on the plan selected. You can read more about the difference between the three core plans here.
Office 365 Enterprise Versions
There are also three versions of Office 365 for enterprise companies. These plans typically cost more because they provide greater scalability, advanced security and compliance capabilities, and more sophisticated administration tools for growing and complex organizations. Office 365 Enterprise plans are designed for organizations that need more scalability, more advanced administration, and broader enterprise-level capabilities.
Importantly, these plans allow you unlimited seats.
Depending on your business requirements, Office 365 Enterprise plans can also provide larger cloud storage options per user, using Microsoft Teams as a phone system, scalable business analytics with Power BI, and more.
Office 365 Enterprise plans are also known for their additional security, compliance, and administration features:
- Data loss prevention
- Advanced threat protection (for example, against malware and phishing attacks)
- Advanced information protection (for sensitive emails, documents, and other data you need to share outside your company)
- Advanced data security and compliance

For many organizations with fewer than 300 users, Microsoft 365 Business Premium offers a strong balance of productivity, collaboration, security, and device management. For organizations with more users, larger storage needs, or more complex compliance and administration requirements, Office 365 Enterprise may be the better long-term fit.
